Boy learns swear words from Scrabble game

December
11

This story is freakin hilarious.

A mother in England is angry from a Scrabble video game she bought for her 8-year-old boy, after the game was teaching her son all sorts of curse words.

Check this out, the boy was playing Scrabble 2007 for his Nintendo DS when the computer player laid down the word “tits.”

The mother took alarm to it but figured, maybe its just a glitch. Plus, the word tits can also mean a “small bird.”

(I don’t know why that definition makes me laugh).

But in case she had any doubt, the next word the computer laid down was ‘f**kers’

Even better, the computer racked up a triple word score for the word and won the game hahahahahaha.

True story: when I was in 4th grade, I entered a Scrabble tournament at my local library in Ohio. I ended up winning the tournament with the word “douchebag.”

The more I see the government bailing out some high profile organizations, the more I think that I am entitled to a little cash myself.

In 2008 alone, the United States government is providing 1.3 trillion dollars to companies who have burned through cash hand over foot.

So far , the following companies are being provided with aid:
Bear Stearns – 30 milllion
Fannie Mae / Freddie Mac – 200 billion
American International Group (A.I.G.) – 150 billion
Auto Industry – 25 Billion
Troubled Asset Relief Program – 700 Billion

Nancy Borowick-A 20-something gives back

December
9

Nancy Borowick, 23, spent months assisting photographers and helping produce photo shoots as an intern at Glamour Magazine.

Near the end of her 2007 internship, she realized that she wanted to give back and teach photography. This year, Borowick eight weeks in Mowire, Ghana where she taught art and  photography to 380 students.

During her stint there, she realized that resources such as water and electricity were scarce and founded the Ghana on Tap Program. Borowick will host a photo exhibit this Saturday at the Katonah Art and Frame Shop to raise money to have a well built in Mowire.

“The trip made me appreciate resources like water,” said the Chappaqua resident. “I am a different person because of it.”

Borowick was raised in Chappaqua and graduated from Horace Greeley High School in 2003. She attended Union College in Schenectady and earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology, photography and modern languages. After completing college she became an intern at Glamour Magazine.

In April, Borowick traveled to Ghana to teach at the Triumph International School. Her students ranged in age from 4-14.

Toward the end of her trip, she asked her host mother what she could do for the school when she returned home. A new well was needed, was the reply.

“The well that they had near the school was usually dry and used by the entire village, ” Borowick said.

So when she came back to the United States, she went on a mission.

In September she had a fundraising photo exhibit displaying her photos in New York City and raised $3,000. Her exhibit on Saturday will display her photos and photographs taken by her students in Ghana. She said she hopes to raise more than $6,000 towards the well.

Borowick said that she loves giving back and plans to go back to Ghana next summer to teach photography to high school students.

“I like the idea of connecting with people and being able to communicate with my photography,” she said. “There is so much power in pictures. It really is the universal language.”

The Ghana on Tap photo exhibit called Take Me A Snap Snap will be at the Katonah Art and Frame Shop on 188 Katonah Ave on Saturday Dec 13. from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Mario Kart in real life!

December
4

Let’s be honest, Mario Kart is the greatest game ever. It introduced me to one of the most beautiful things in life — making my little brother cry on a regular basis.

The famous french prankster Remi Gaillard agrees about the game’s greatness in his latest video. Dressing up as Mario, Remi hits the streets of France in a go-kart throwing bananas at passersby.

This video has rocked my world for today.

Official Kiss controller for Guitar Hero

December
3

God, I want this so bad.

Shell out 80 bucks and you can get your hands on a Gene Simmons approved controller that works for both the Guitar Hero and Rock Band games.

This bad boy can be played wirelessly as far as 30 feet and is an official replica of Gene Simmon’s famous axe guitar.  Like I said, it works for both series, so you’ll be able to do all the new shredding features in Guitar Hero World Tour just fine.

The controller is already available for PlayStation 3 and Wii dorks have to wait until Dec. 10.

But what makes me want to rip out my beard is that they haven’t set a date on when they’ll release the controller for Xbox 360. LAME!

Fashion Sense: Trish O’Connor

December
3

With a little bit of luck and desire to take her career into a new direction, Trish O’Connor found a dream job as a fashion and retail recruiter.

The 26-year-old from Yorktown began working for JBCStyle, a fashion staffing agency with an office in Manhattan, earlier this year after realizing how much she enjoyed styling and helping others.

“I always loved getting dressed,” O’Connor said. “I was like the girl in middle school and high school who wrote down what she wore so she didn’t repeat for two months. Yeah, I had a clothes calendar.”

Cook eggs with a flashlight son!

December
2

I thought I had seen it all when it came to flash lights, but today I stand corrected.

Check this out, a company by the name of Wicked Lasers has created a flashlight so powerful that it can instantly set paper on fire!

Now you might be asking “Aman, how practical is that?” But before you finish asking that question, I shine the flashlight on your forehead and burn off your eyebrows.

If you thought the last video was dope, this flashlight can get so hot that it can even cook eggs!

If you want to buy one of these, be prepared to shell out $300 for it.

Obama supporter takes cash over free trip to inauguration

December
2

Bonnie Podewils of Knoxville, Tenn. knew we were in a recession long before the United States declared it yesterday.

While inaugural airfare, tickets and Washington hotel prices continue to sky rocket, Podewils was recently offered a free trip to the inauguration after winning an online game show.

According to the Washington Post, instead of taking the roundtrip airfare, hotel accommodations and two tickets to the inauguration, she opted for $1,700 in cash and $1,000 in gift certificates from restaurant.com.

The Obama supporter said the money would be used for Christmas and to pay bills.

1 in 5 Gen Yers have mental problems.

December
1

I’m using restraint in not calling us all crazy, because a new, big important study that came out today says a lot of young people have personality disorders and not many of us are doing anything about it. And you thought global warming and the collapsed economy were the biggest problems of our generation.

Apparently, 1 in 5 ages 19 to 25 have compulsive tendencies or anti-social behavior that can — gulp — sometimes lead to violence. (Does a closet obsession with The Hills count?)

The survey of some 5,000 young folks found that most of them have drug and alcohol abuse problems and many have behaviors that interfere with daily life. (Like incessantly checking Facebook for friend updates?)

Anyway, I always wonder how much these studies can be trusted if the results always seem to the mirror the agenda of the people doing it. In this case, a bunch of psychiatric research centers, which probably always need to prove they need funding for something.

Should we obsess over the findings?

What’s harder for young women: working with men or working for a woman?

December
1

Totally by coincidence, I found two articles in the last couple of days about women in the workplace — and they couldn’t be more different. Cha-ching! Great blog material.

I was leafing through Marie Claire — don’t judge me, it actually does have interesting articles in between the glossy blurbs about flouncy clothes and accessories I can’t afford.

This intriguing story asks: why do ambitious young women say they hate working for other women? Turns out female bosses are either too chummy or too catty. Shocker. Makes me think the two extremes of how Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton have been portrayed.

On the flip side, an article in the Wall Street Journal offers tips — condescendingly I might add — for women to “fit in” a dude-dominated office. How about identifying “alpha and beta males” so you can mold your language accordingly when addressing them?  Seriously? Are we in the jungle?

Oh yeah, ladies, and don’t forget to throw back a beer with your male co-workers every now and then, but whatever you do, don’t offer to get the coffee for meetings. You’ll make Susie Anthony roll over in her grave.

I’ll let you be the judge on this one.
