Get 20 free songs for Rock Band 2

October
22

The creators of Rock Band 2 have promised forever and a half that people who buy the game are eligible to download 20 free songs.ap_rock_band2_080630_mn.jpg

Well, Harmonix announced today the songs will be available to download on Nov. 4. using the registration code listed on the back of the manual for the game.

I gotta say, these 20 songs are LAME. I’d rather jam to “Bananaphone” by Raffi than these nauseating arrangements.

Check out the song list after the jump.

Gen Y workers are the weakest link or strongest asset?

October
21

A recent study by Jobfox, an Internet career site, says Gen Y workers are perceived by recruiters as being the weakest performers among the four generations that now make up the U.S. workforce.

Jobfox further believes it is corporate leaders—not Gen Y professionals—who need attitude adjustments. The website warns companies that they must do a better job of hiring, appreciating and motivating younger workers or risk competitive disadvantage.

The website surveyed more than 200 recruiters about their perceptions of job performance across generations and found that employers have yet to embrace the unique work habits of Gen Y, a population that is roughly 28 years old and younger.

Only 20 percent of the recruiters surveyed classified Gen Y, also known as Millennials, as “generally great performers.” This compares to 63 percent of the recruiters polled who said Baby Boomers (43 to 62 years old) were great performers, 58 percent who gave high marks to Gen X (29 to 42) and 25 percent for Traditionalists (63 and older).

This survey may be a great eye opener to employers since the website says Gen Y will ultimately represent the largest population of workers since the Baby Boomers.

Celebrity endorsements motivate young voters

October
21

According to a study by the fine folks at Washington University, celebrities do have a significant impact on getting young voters totjndc5-5lj6mznltmx1k8l6d4ed_layout.jpg the polls.

Celebrities don’t always have the most insightful things to say about politics, such as Britney Spears’ famous CNN interview in 2003 when she said “I think we should just trust our president in every decision he makes and should just support that, you know, and be faithful in what happens.”

But hey, anytime celebrities use their fame to responsibly encourage civic engagement, I’m for it.

My homie Theresa Juva disagrees.

Facebooking about your wedding. Good or bad idea?

October
21

Lauren Estes, a 22-year-old from Plano Texas, might get the Mean Girl of the Year award for using Facebook to fret over her small diamond engagement ring. tjndc5-5m3fabw8gxj95c2d3tl_layout.jpg

Rather than consulting friends in private, she did the digital-age equivalent of plastering a sign on a corner lamp post: she turned to the Facebook Wedding application.

“My ring is less than half a carat. I was kind of freaking out,” she told the Dallas Morning News. “I posted a question saying, ‘What do you guys think?’ because I was genuinely upset about it. Within two or three days, I had over 150 hits from people who gave me their opinion.”

Subjecting the love of your life to public humiliation? Eek. Hopefully her fiancee or any of his buddies isn’t a Facebook friend.

But some 20-somethings are using the Facebook Wedding application for more innocuous wedding purposes, such as seating arrangements (Now you  have time to prepare for sitting next to your pal’s party-too-hard former college roomie) and “Save-the-Date” announcements (No more dumb snail mail cards urging you not to plan anything for some random June weekend in 2010.)

Yet until grandma and grandpa get their own Facebook profiles, don’t expect the eradication of traditional invites anytime soon.

How are you saving money?

October
20

Last week, Theresa Juva and I took a stroll through downtown White Plains asking 20-something hipsters about saving money. They all had some practical ideas on what we can do to save money towards important investments like a owning a new home (or in my case, turning my living room into a baller high-definition movie theatre).

Advertising executive Matt Schlett, 28, said he uses old-fashioned ways of saving money instead of 401Ks:

Product manager Paul Bybel, 24, said partying is affecting his saving habits:

Army sergeant Jeremy DeKay, 27, said he knows the easiest way to save money:

Nachos lady R.I.P.

October
19

All my favorite people have been passing away in 2008. First Tim Russert. Then Bernie Mac.

And now, the lady who invented nachos.tjndc5-5gqvdbdmnus1n9drrhoy_original.jpg

Carmen Rocha, a former waitress at the El Cholo Mexican restaurant in Los Angeles, died this month from cancer. She was 77.

In 1959, Rocha decided to treat her customers to an item that wasn’t on the menu by preparing a warmed dish of tortilla chips layered with melted cheese and jalapeños.

Little did Rocha know that she invented a dish that would soon break down the walls of segregation among video game nerds, potheads and comic book dorks all across America.

To that, we salute you Carmen.

I heard her last request was to be buried with a side of guacamole. But the family decided not to because it cost 45 cents extra.

Was that joke too much?

Free UFC fights on SpikeTV Saturday

October
17

SpikeTV is airing UFC 89 on Saturday for the conveniently low price of absolutely nothing. The fight airs at 9pm EST and will probably be tape delayed from the UK. The card is pretty solid from top to bottom.

I have analyzed the fights here, so if you are interested in learning a little bit more about the fight card then you should check it out.

I also took a look at the betting lines for the fight. If you are into underdog betting, you might want to drop a few bucks on Chris Leben. Bodoglife.com has Leben at +190, so if Leben wins then you make $1.90 on every $1.00 you gamble.

Saving the world isn’t your average 9 to 5.

October

And you thought volunteering at a soup kitchen for one day a year was altruistic. How about giving up a lucrative career for a socialtjndc5-5lwengds0pfyrseki31_layout.jpg cause?

Some 20-somethings are not only dedicating themselves to poverty-stricken areas, but are doing it by launching their own organizations, according to Tuesday’s Washington Post.

A group for orphans of AIDS, an intiative to protect civilians in war-torn areas and a program that provides insulin to diabetics in Latin America are just a few enterprenial projects started by Gen Y.

Obama flip-flopping on video games?

October
16

This line from Barack Obama during last night’s debate has filled me with nerd rage today:

“Parents are going to have to show more responsibility,” Obama said “They’ve got to turn off the TV set, put away the video games, and, finally, start instilling that thirst for knowledge that our students need.”obama-on-xbox-360.jpg

Hmm, if I’m not mistaken, Obama’s campaign is advertising in video games, as I reported this week.

By the way, I even beat CNN to the punch on that story. In your face Wolf Blitzer, my beard is cooler than yours too.

But what gives? Obama wants to diss video games but thinks they’re important enough to advertise in?
