When most 20-somethings are trying to break into the corporate world, Xian Glynn is all about producing beats. The 26-year-old artist, rapper, songwriter, dancer, guitar player and slam poet ’s main goal is to perfect her art.
“I am trying to bridge the gap between the corporate world and what I want to do. I don’t want to compromise myself,” she said.
Raised in the Bronx, Glynn graduated from SUNY Potsdam with degrees in speech communication and employment relations. However, she said she always had a love for music and her father played disco records in her house.
“My parents are both into music and my mom sings.”
While in school, she interned for radio personality Wendy Williams for a year and for Atlantic Records, which is the home of rappers Diddy, T.I. and Missy Elliot. She said that she always kept her love of music first.
“I think there are a lot of people in their 20s who are compromising, living day to day and not shooting for their main goals,” she said. “Parents put kids in a box but, they are good at more than one thing. When they get out in the job market, it goes out of the window.”
Glynn said that her parents, a retired law enforcement officer and someone who “did it all,†have always been supportive of her dreams.
“I was never told you’re a loser or get a real job and I know I will always have a home,” she declared. “I feel like my mother is living vicariously through me because she always wanted to sing. She wants me to find a job that I like.”
So with the issues that affect 20 somethings such as the plunging economy, student loans, getting a home and finding a place in the world, Glynn remains calm. She is working at an after-school program and promoting her latest single “Cotton Shirt.”
In the music world she is known as Xi Guevara, a name she gave herself in memory of Argentine revolutionary Che Guevara.
“I am a revolutionary before I am an artist.”
Along with Che Guevara, Glynn said she also admires artistic revolutionaries: Berry Gordy, Spike Lee and Oprah Winfrey.
She said she has many things planned for the future.
“I am writing a script, I want to get my songs out, I want to keep performing and I want to start my own record label to sign underground artists. But I want to focus on my songs first.”
Glynn said she is happy because she is living the life she wants to live.
“I love networking and the average 26-year-olds are not doing that. I have accomplished a lot more than a lot of people but, I still have room for growth.”
